Write pages
How a page gets its title, address, and summary, and how links, images, and snippets work on the site.
A page is a Falconer document: one you write in the editor, or a Markdown file synced from a repository. Everything on this page applies to both. For where pages live and how they’re placed in the navigation, see Docs view and Files view.
What makes a page
Section titled “What makes a page”| Part | Where it comes from |
|---|---|
| Title | The document’s title, the one you see in Falconer. For a synced file that’s title in the frontmatter, or the first heading when there’s none. A document with no title is left out of the build, and its children take its place. |
| Address | The file path, lower-cased and without its extension: guides/Install.mdx is served at /guides/install. A page that has no file is served under a path made from its title. |
| Summary | The description in the frontmatter. Without one, the first 160 characters of the page’s opening text, cut at a sentence or word. It’s shown in search results, link previews, and llms.txt. |
| Sidebar label | sidebarTitle in the frontmatter, else the title. |
| Headings | Every heading gets a stable anchor, so /guides/install#requirements links to a section. |
Page settings
Section titled “Page settings”Frontmatter is the YAML block at the top of the page’s Markdown. These keys change how the page is built.
| Key | What it does |
|---|---|
title | The document’s title, when the page is a synced file |
description | The summary above |
sidebarTitle | A shorter label for the sidebar |
tableOfContents | false hides the on-page table of contents |
hidden | true builds the page but leaves it out of the sidebar and marks it noindex. Its children move up into its place. The same as Hide from navigation on a section. |
access | public or private. A private page isn’t built at all. Wins over the section’s Publishing options. |
noindex | true keeps the page out of search engines, the sitemap, and the llms files. The page still serves. |
pagefind | false leaves the page out of site search and Ask the docs, which share one index. Search engines aren’t affected. |
openapi, openapi-schema | Render an API reference from an OpenAPI document. See API reference pages. |
When access is absent, the Mintlify keys are read instead: public: true opens the page, and any groups value makes it private.
For the settings a section carries, and how they inherit, see Private and hidden.
Links between pages
Section titled “Links between pages”Link to another page by its file path, and Falconer rewrites the link to the page’s address when it builds the site.
- A relative path,
./install.mdor../guides/install, is resolved from the folder of the page you’re writing. - A root-relative path,
/guides/install, is resolved from the root of the site’s files. - The extension is optional:
installfindsinstall.md,install.mdx, orinstall/index.md. - Anchors and query strings are kept:
/guides/install#requirements.
A link that matches no page is left as written, and so are external links. A reference chip to a Falconer document only works when that document is a page on the site.
Every build checks the links between pages and lists the broken ones, with the reason, under Issues. See Issues.
Images and files
Section titled “Images and files”Reference an image by its path, the same way as a link, or add it in the editor and Falconer stores it for you. The file has to be in the space’s Files view; images on other websites are left as plain URLs.
- Formats: SVG, PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP, AVIF, BMP, and ICO. SVGs are sanitized before they’re served.
- Each image can be up to 100 MB. Logos and favicons set in Site configuration are limited to 5 MB.
- An image the build can’t find, read, or recognize is left out of the page.
- Moving an image in Files keeps it working; Falconer rewrites the pages that reference it.
- In a space synced with GitHub, images you add in the editor are committed to the repository. See Images and other files.
To let visitors download a PDF or another file, link to its path in Files.
Reusable snippets
Section titled “Reusable snippets”In an .mdx file, import another file and place it as a component to reuse the same content on several pages.
import Requirements from '/snippets/requirements.mdx';
<Requirements />- The path has to be root-relative, starting with
/. - The snippet’s own frontmatter is dropped, and links and images inside it are resolved from the snippet’s location, not the page’s.
- A snippet that can’t be found is left out and reported as a build warning.
Components
Section titled “Components”Callouts, tabs, steps, cards, diagrams, and the other blocks that render on the site are listed on Components, with the syntax for each.
